Chinese medicine in Chicago

For the first time, Chinese medicine was featured at the annual conference for AutismOne Radio held in Chicago. Burr Ridge resident Dr. Qiying Jiang, a third-generation board certified acupuncturist and expert in Chinese medicine, presented at the conference. Jiang highlighted her success in treating children with autism through the use of Chinese medicine.

Jiang's office is located in Willowbrook. She brings traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture to the area, having graduated from Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China and completing her master's degree in Oriental medicine from the Southwest Acupuncture College in Santa Fe, N.M.

According to Chinese medicine, autism is caused by an imbalance among the five major organs; liver, spleen, heart, kidney and lung. Because there are five differentiations of autism depending upon the organ afflicted, Jiang utilizes several different methods to treat the condition. These include infant massage, acupressure, acupuncture and an herbal formula.

Jiang has practiced acupuncture and Chinese medicine in both China and the United States. She comes from a family of acupuncturists, including her grandfather and her mother. She is certified by the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in Acupuncture and Herbology.

From 1998 until 2002, Jiang served as the team acupuncturist for the Chicago Fire Major League Soccer Team. She also worked with the Lincoln-Way High School football team and the 2004 Olympic Women's Gymnastic finalists.

Beginning Thursday, July 20, Jiang will be speaking once a month on Autism One Radio. For more information, visit www.autismone.org/radio.

Jiang is also planning to conduct a workshop on pediatric massage. It will be geared to helping parents learn massage techniques that they can use on their children from ages 3 to 7 at home on a regular basis.
